A Critical Hazard Analysis Rating (CHAR) based on the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) concept is used to monitor oyster purification in New South Wales (N.S.W.), Australia. Critical areas for assessment include oyster condition, separation of raw and treated oysters, water quality (turbidity, salinity, temperature, aeration, circulation), purification period, flow rate, steriliser efficiency and tank hydraulics. Batch records and product identification are included. Purification supplements a total management program for producing safe oysters. The rating can also be used to endorse oysters produced under industry self-regulatory, quality assurance programs. The four main CHAR areas are operational standards, quality assurance, public health... |

The Recent and Fossil species of Paralimnocythere are reassessed and the genus is characterized using both soft part and valve morphology. Seventeen species, of which eleven have living representatives, are here retained. Relictocytherina Negadaev-Nikonov, 1968 is confirmed as a synonym of Paralimnocythere; R. orginalis (Negadaev-Nikonov, 1965), the type species is furthermore synonymous with P. relicta (Lilljeborg, 1863). Paralimnocythere psammmophila (Flössner, 1965) and P. compressa (Brady & Norman, 1889) are both reinstated as valid species, quite different from P. relicta. All Recent Balkan species are retained as... |

A growing body of empirical studies have been interpreted as support for a laissez-faire policy towards mergers. These "event studies" examine the reaction of stock market prices of firms that announce an agreement to merge. The type ~f reaction reveals whether a merger is motivated by a desire for market power or purely to improve market efficiency. In this paper, a version of the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) is applied to determine if abnormal returns are earned by rivals of 22 pairs of firms whose attempted horizontal mergers were challenged by the federal antitrust agencies. At most eight, and possibly only five, of the cases were found to be motivated by efficiency in seeking merger, and at most six, and possibly only one, were motivated by... |

Neospora caninum is a recently recognized protozoan parasite of animals. Until 1988, it was misdiagnosed as Toxoplasma gondii. Neospora caninum or Neospora-like parasites cause paralysis and death in dogs and neonatal mortality and abortion in cattle, sheep, goats and horses. Its life cycle is not known. Tachyzoites and tissue cysts are the only asexual stages known and the carnivorous definitive host is not known. Transplacental transmission is the only known natural route of infection. |

Until the early 1980s, Mexican economic policy was characterized by import substitution industrialization. Agriculture's role was to provide a cheap and abundant food supply for the urban sector, and to generate foreign exchange through exports. While Mexico achieved food self-sufficiency by the early 1960s, conflicting policies succeeded in undermining basic grain production and exacerbating an existent dichotomy between traditional and rainfed production. Austerity measures imposed during the 1980s resulting from the collapse of world oil prices further undermined small-scale production. These effects are viewed in the context of the bean subsector, characterized by a bimodal system of production; while the majority of Mexican bean producers are... |

The controversial circumstances relating to the classification of the benign Theileria species from Japan, Australia and Britain, which are frequently referred to as T. sergenti/buffeli/orientalis group parasites, was reviewed. Our recent systematic comparisons suggest a possibility that the Japanese T. sergenti (minor piroplasm in common parlance) might be a new species and the Australian T. buffeli and British T. orientalis might belong to one and the same species. The necessity for the review of the genus name for these benign Theileria species was also briefly discussed after the morphological studies of their schizogony. |

Various records of A. simplex Carter, 1879 from the Atlantic are assigned to three new species of the sponge genus Asteropus Sollas, 1888, viz.: A. brasiliensis sp. n., A. vasiformis sp. n., and A. niger sp. n., whereas A. simplex s.s. is restricted to the Indo- Pacific. A worldwide study of Asteropus specimens resulted in the conclusion that two species groups exist, namely “simplex”- like species (with true sanidasters), and “sarasinorum”-like species (with spiny microrhabds), as previously observed by Bergquist (1965, 1968). A newly discovered microsclere complement of trichodragmata in the first group strengthens the need for generic distinction of both lineages, and accordingly the name Melophlus Thiele, 1899 is reinstated for the “sarasinorum”... |

The genus Microtypus Ratzeburg, 1848 (Braconidae: Microtypinae) is revised, its species are keyed, and a new species, M. petiolatus van Achterberg spec. nov. is described. The type species is redescribed and fully illustrated. The genus Similearinus Glowacki & Karpinski, 1967 is a new junior synonym of Microtypus; S. ilinskyi Glowacki & Karpiński, 1967 is a new junior synonym of Microtypus trigonus (Nees, 1834), and M. dioryctriae Rohwer, 1920 of M. wesmaelii Ratzeburg, 1848. For both senior synonyms neotypes are designated. The Malagasian species that have been placed in Microtypus are excluded and transferred to the genus Stantonia Ashmead, 1904. |

In this paper, a revision of the Pliocene and Quaternary Lutrinae from Europe is presented. Such a revision, including fossil material, has not been published since the work of Pohle (1919). Three tribes within the Lutrinae are recognized: the Lutrini, the Aonyxini and the Enhydrini. The latter comprises both Enhydra and the Enhydriodon group. The genus Nesolutra, consisting of three insular species, is not retained. Two are included in Lutra and for N. ichnusae a new genus, Sardolutra, is proposed. The genus Isolalutra is not retained either. Its only species, I. cretensis, is included in the genus Lutrogale. Some new material of this species is described. A number of well-preserved fossils of Cyrnaonyx antiqua are described, such as the hitherto unknown... |

A revision is given of the 16 recognized South American species of the New World genus Aphylla Selys. Three new species are described and figured, viz. A. scapula (♂ holotype; Brazil, Territorio de Rondônia, Fazenda Rancho Grande), A. silvatica (♂ holotype: Ecuador, Provincia Napo, Limoncocha) and A. spinula (♂ holotype: Perú, Departamento de Cuzco, Río Urubamba). A. obscura (Kirby, 1899) and A. albinensis Belle, 1970, are considered junior synonyms of A. tenuis Selys, 1859, and A. brevipes Selys, 1854, respectively, while A. simulata Belle, 1964, is considered a synonym of A. dentata Selys, 1859. Separate identification keys to the males and the females of the South American species of Aphylla are provided. |

A simple semi flow-through Artemia culture unit is described for possible integration in marine fish and shellfish hatcheries as a source of a cheap nursery diet. The system does not require the use of feeding pumps and involves minimal care. Food preparation and addition to the feeding tank is reduced to one or two manipulations per day during the meta-nauplius stages (day 1-3) and the juvenile stages (day 4-14), respectively. Biomass productions are superior to those reported to those for stagnant culture systems and are comparable to those demonstrated for flow-through culture units. This simple rearing technique offers the possibility of producing brine shrimp populations with a uniform size. Furthermore, by varying the feeding... |

A stress test is proposed for the evaluation of the physiological condition of fish larvae in nutritional studies. The test was used in a study of quantitative (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) requirements in larval Lates calcarifer and Siganus guttatus. It enabled to suggest fast intervention at reduced larval quality and allowed to prevent mass mortalities. The stress test offered valuable information for the quantification study of fatty acid requirements in marine fish larvae. In Lates demands for fatty acids were detected in metamorphosis. In Siganus on the other hand, the sensitivity of the larvae was considerably reduced after short (n-3) HUFA boosting of the... |
